Dry rot or Serpula Lacrymans, used to be referred to as "Cancer" of a building. Able to grow through masonry and brickwork, many myths have developed over the years about this fungus.
Dry rot is incredibly destructive if not treat correctly, and can often cause extensive damage, but it can be treatable.
The remedial treatment of Dry Rot can be complicated. The first thing Exopest needs to do is establish the size and extent of the problem. Dry rot is usually limited to damp wood, usually softwoods, but it can and does spread into dry areas.
A good visual indication of Dry Rot is decayed wood which has deep cuboidal cracking, the wood is also often light and crumbly.
Once the extent of the rot is worked out, eliminating the source of the moisture is the first thing needed, and then rapid drying of infected area and good ventilation are to be promoted.
Exopest will then look at a number of other options
*Cutting out infected wood, plaster, rendering and skirting
*Removing mycelium and strands
*Introducing barriers
*Applying surface biocides and fungicidal paints
*Implementing a "cordon sanitaire" around the outbreak to protect further timber
For Dry Rot, Wet Rot and WOODWORM treatments call Exopest today.
In this photo you will see grey strands that look a bit like thick cobwebs or plant roots. These are the Dry Rot strands which have travelled from the main body, through inert brickwork in search of more timber. It is these strands and mycelium that makes dry rot so very destructive.
